BUT Formazza: The Beauty of Val Formazza on Full Display
13 July 2026The countdown has begun for the 2026 edition of BUT Formazza, the trail running event taking place on July 11 and organized by Formazza Event. For nearly twenty years, BUT Formazza has been a must-attend event for trail running enthusiasts eager to experience the breathtaking High-Altitude Emotions that make this race truly unique.
17 Countries and 13 Italian Regions Represented
A total of 736 athletes have already registered. Online registration is now closed; however, it will still be possible to register on-site on Saturday morning only for the Bettelmatt Walser Mini.
At the moment, 17 countries are represented among the participants: Italy, Belgium, Romania, Algeria, France, Hungary, Great Britain, Peru, the United States, Croatia, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Moldova, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Sweden.
The geographical diversity within Italy is equally impressive, with runners coming from 13 different regions: Piedmont, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Emilia-Romagna, Marche, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Aosta Valley, Tuscany, Lazio, Veneto, Abruzzo and Apulia.
Among the registered athletes are Gianluca Pinton, Sara Locatelli (3rd in 2025 and winner in 2024) and Monica Moia in the 44 km race; Thomas Floriani (winner in 2025), Federico Mussi (3rd in 2025), Marta Ripamonti and Chiara Cerlini in the 24 km race; and Luca Sogni in the 57 km race.
Distances and Start Times
The first race to start will be the Bettelmatt Walser Ultra at 6:00 a.m., covering approximately 57 km with 3,436 m of elevation gain. The course reaches spectacular locations including Rifugio 3A (almost 3,000 m above sea level) and the alpine lakes of Vannino, Morasco, Sabbione, Toggia and Castel.
At 7:00 a.m., the Bettelmatt Walser Marathon will begin: approximately 44 km with 2,745 m of elevation gain, following the first section of the Ultra course up to Rifugio 3A.
At 9:00 a.m., runners will set off on the Bettelmatt Walser Race, a 24 km course featuring 1,320 m of elevation gain, crossing Passo Nefelgiù and passing the spectacular Toce Waterfall.
The final event of the day, the Bettelmatt Walser Mini, will start at 10:30 a.m.. Covering 6 km with approximately 200 m of elevation gain, it is designed for younger participants and those looking for a less demanding challenge.
Whichever distance participants choose, they will experience the unforgettable High-Altitude Emotions that only BUT Formazza can offer.
